The choice of books, acquisition and cataloging are the responsibility of the Acquisitions and cataloging division. Division of Circulation and reference services is responsible for the management of books and journals, interlibrary service, and other consulting affairs. Division of Information system management is responsible for the operation and maintenance of all hardware and software systems. Audio-visual apparatus such as DVD, VCD, tapes, and their displaying and maintenance are the duty of the Audio-visual division. The Library is a five-story building, measuring some 18,530 square meters. Four stories are above the ground and one is underground. The first floor of the building contains the circulation desk that controls all materials circulation. The reference area displays the various reference books, statistical materials, academic research reports and booklets. To support teaching and research for the faculty members and students, the library also provides inter-library loan and copying services. The CD-ROMS retrieval and OPAC area allows readers easy access to available data. The reading room offers comfortable space for students to read. The newspaper-reading area has various newspapers including current editions and back issues. The second floor of the building includes the stack room with many kinds of Chinese and Japanese books on the shelves. Readers may borrow varieties of non-print materials from the Audio-Visual division, such as CD, LCD, VCD, films and audiotapes. Some audio-visual classrooms provide comfortable spaces. Western-language books are put on the third floor. The fourth floor of the building is the periodicals area that exhibits current periodicals and bound issues. In addition, there is an international conference auditorium for meeting. The automation of the library and visual library is being assessed at present. Up to date, there are more than 205,000 Chinese books, 55,000 English books in the library, as well as 535 Chinese journals, 520 English journals, 1,200 digital audio-visual items, 4,800 teaching video tapes, 1600 tapes, and 31 electronic information databases. The size of the collection increases at an annual rate of about 5%.
